LiDAR or Light Detection And Ranging is an optical remote sensing technology that measures properties of scattered light to find range and/or other information of a distant target or object. The prevalent method to determine distance to an object or surface is to use laser pulses much like current radar technologies in use today which uses radio waves to get accurate range to an object. The impact of Laser Scanning and the potential for its use has been gaining momentum this past decade and its application is being fully implemented in use from Terrestrial Laser Scanning, Airborne LiDAR, Mobile LiDAR, Short-range Laser Scanning, Digital Heritage Preservation, and even to Forensics and Crime Scene or Accident Investigations by Law Enforcement.

Laser Scanning hardware has been light years ahead of Software and in the past 3 years the software and its ease-of-use has really started to catch up. There is now a logical push to whats called BIM to Field" or even Laser Scanning to BIM solutions that will focus on helping building owners, contractors, and all engineers better understand the potential use of transferring real-time scanned data to field level systems for increased productivity and cost savings. Industry veterans are suggesting what CAD did for paper blue prints, LiDAR technologies will do for replacing paper completely by representing true accurate 3D models for many different types of projects.

Recently, the California Department of Transportation Published Terrestrial Laser Scanning Standards. These standards cover both static and mobile platforms and will certainly make an impact and become an industry reference worldwide.

Come learn and attend our next Building Success event to see what Clark Construction, RBF Consulting, PSOMAS Engineering, and SPEC Services are doing in applying Laser Scanning in their past and current projects!
