There is probably no historic site in the world better known than Piazza del Duomo in Pisa, Italy. Unlike the paved piazzas typical of Italy, the Piazza del Duomo is an expansive green grassy field dominated by three monumental works of architecture in luminous white marble. They are the renown cathedral, baptistery, and campanile with its famous inclination.

As a part of upgrading their ongoing maintenance and attention to conservation, the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, decided to acquire a new survey record document using state-of-the-art technologies as part of its cultural resource management plan. The documentation was planned and executed by a team led by the DIAPReM research center of the University of Ferrara. DIAPReM was one of the earliest adopters of 3D laser scanning for use for documenting cultural heritage sites. The team also included ISTI-CNR Pisa and the Department for Architectural Design of the University of Florence. The final 3D laser scan survey data was fused into a master point cloud dataset that contains a total of 256,653,388 points. Truly a monumental project in itself.
