SCALGO Hydrology 1.2 Released

SCALGO has released version 1.2 of thesoftwarepackage SCALGO Hydrology, which can be used to perform basic hydrologicalmodeling on massive rasterterrain models (containing tens of billions of cells) on a normaldesktop computer.

The new version contains a number of new features that make it easierto perform large-area hydrological analysis. These features includehandling of massive collections of polygon data, which e.g. allows foreasy and efficient "burning" of a large number of features (such asbuildings, ridges and culverts) that are important for hydrologicalmodeling into a large-area terrain model. The release also includesfunctionality that allows for efficient computation of variousmeasures (height, area, volume) of all depressions (includingdepressions inside other depressions) in massive raster terrainmodels, which e.g. allows for easy and efficient identification of thedepressions and terrain areas most important for hydrologicalmodeling.

As the previous version, all SCALGO Hydrology 1.2 modules can be runthrough a standalone graphical user-interface or from within ArcGIS. InSCALGO Hydrology 1.2 the newly released ArcGIS version 10.1 issupported and an ArcGIS viewer has been added that allows for easyvisualization of the output of many of the package modules.

The new release also contains updates to the standaloneuser-interface and to some of the core algorithms, including theutilization of multiple CPU cores. Overall, the most significantupdates in SCALGO Hydrology 1.2 include:

  • Extension to the Bluespotmodule so that each bluespotcell contains the measure (height, area or volume) of the depressionbelow the cell.
  • New Clipmodule that clips a raster or a point cloudaccording to a set of polygons.
  • New Burnmodule that burns elevation values from a set ofpolygons into a raster or a point cloud.
  • New Calculatemodule that evaluates a function for eachcell in a raster.
  • New Masksmodule that generates binary masks from araster (e.g. useful for post-processing Sea-Levels moduleoutput).
  • Merge of TIN Conversion, Raster Conversionand Point Conversioninto new Convertmodule.
  • Addition of multi-core support in many core algorithms.
  • Updated standalone user-interface, including options to monitorCPU, disk and memory use.
  • Addition of ArcGIS viewer for visualizing the output from many ofthe package modules.
  • Support for ArcGIS 10.1.

Scalable Algorithmics (SCALGO) was founded in 2009 with themission to bring cutting-edge massive terrain data processingtechnology to market. The SCALGO technology is based on more than twodecades of basic and applied research on I/O-efficient and geometricalgorithms at Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO) at AarhusUniversity in Denmark and at Duke University in the US, incollaboration with industry LiDAR and environmental GIS applicationexperts. Software based on the technology can handle much largerterrain data sets on a normal desktop than most current software andthus it eliminates the need for accuracy-decreasing data thinning. Theuse of novel mathematical and algorithmic techniques also means thatthe software works provably efficient on all input data sets, delivering a completely specified output without the use of cumbersomeworkflows such as those introduced by data tiling. SCALGO is involvedin multiple research projects and offer special pricing for academicinstitutions.
