From Scan to BIM to Digital Twin: The story behind digitally preserving one of architecture’s most iconic landmarks
Salt Lake City, UT — November 4, 2027 — Geo Week announced its 2027 opening keynote, From Legacy to Longevity: Digitally Preserving 90 Years of Fallingwater, a presentation on the digital preservation initiative behind Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece. Fallingwater’s visionary design demands an equally forward-thinking approach to its preservation. Safeguarding its architectural integrity, cultural significance, and enduring legacy means honoring Wright’s original vision while addressing aging materials, evolving environmental conditions, and changing generational perspectives. As the landmark approaches its second century, a digital preservation initiative has been spearheaded by a team that integrates GIS and advanced digital twin technologies to develop a comprehensive, data-driven model supporting the documentation, interpretation, protection, and long-term stewardship of Fallingwater.
“Throughout our years of work on historic preservation projects, Fallingwater has held a particularly special place in our hearts. Our involvement in its preservation has been a deeply meaningful experience,” said Touf Hassoun, President and CEO of Case Technologies. “Preserving Fallingwater was never just about capturing the building. It was about capturing what makes it extraordinary.”
“Fallingwater is one of architecture’s most iconic landmarks, and we’re excited to open Geo Week 2027 with the incredible story of how it’s being preserved for generations to come,” said Carla Lauter, Senior Content Manager at Geo Week. “This team’s journey from scan to digital twin will resonate with our audience who bring the same skillsets to their work every day across industries we serve. It shows how advanced technology can capture not just a structure, but the essence of a place.”
The keynote presenters include:
- Justin Gunther, Vice President of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and Director of Fallingwater
- Mark Dietrick, Director of Services, Case Technologies
- Touf Hassoun, President and CEO, Case Technologies
Presenters will share the journey of digitally preserving Fallingwater, exploring how technology can go beyond capturing a building’s physical structure to preserve the experience, atmosphere, and essence of a truly remarkable place. Walking through the complete process, from 3D scanning and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to the creation of a digital twin, they will reveal how the team transformed the unique experience of Fallingwater into a digital representation that goes beyond geometry and data. Attendees will learn about the challenges, insights, and innovations behind the project and how digital technologies are opening new possibilities for architectural preservation, storytelling, and experiencing cultural heritage.
