Al Karlin Appointed to Urban Flooding Open Knowledge Network Advisory Panel

Fairfax, VA—February 2, 2021 – Dewberry, a privately held professional services firm, has announced that Al Karlin, Ph.D., CMS-L, GISP, has been appointed to the Urban Flooding Open Knowledge Network (UF-OKN) advisory panel for the 2021-2022 term.

Karlin, who is a senior geospatial information systems (GIS) professional in Dewberry’s Tampa, Florida, office, has more than 20 years of experience in the geospatial and remote sensing industry and has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles focused on trends and technologies in the geospatial and remote sensing industry. He spent many years in academia before joining Dewberry in 2019 and continues to serve as an adjunct professor of biology at the University of Tampa.

UF-OKN is an informational infrastructure built using knowledge graphs aiming to extract structured content from the information generated in urban systems, such as the power grid, transportation network, and water utilities. It aims to provide actionable flood information to a wide range of users from the general public to emergency responders and utilities, regional and state governments, federal agencies, and private industry. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation and has many partners, including universities, federal agencies, industry organizations, and academic institutions.

Karlin earned a Ph.D. in theoretical population genetics from Miami University (1978), a master’s in ecology from Indiana State University (1975), and a bachelor’s in biology from Rutgers (1972). He has been an active member of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing for more than 25 years and has served on various committees during his time. Karlin has participated on various GIS Certification Institute committees and is a member of the Florida Academy of Sciences and the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association.
