Airborne Technologies Monitors Pipelines for Public Safety

A permanent monitoring is mandatory for pipeline operators to ensure safe operation. Due to the large spatial extent of a pipeline system, airborne remote sensing is the most efficient method to identify and monitor changes and threats of the pipelines during the decades of their lifecycle.

In cooperation with Trans Austria Gasleitung GmbH (TAG GmbH), natural gas pipeline operator in Austria, Airborne Technologies has developed a comprehensive pipeline monitoring concept, perfectly tailored to the requirements of the pipeline industry. It establishes a baseline of critical information for the safe management of Austrias utility network and energy security.

Due to multi-sensor data acquisition, several different data sets are collected during one single flight. This detailed geo-referenced information is available at any time and provides the basis for various evaluations, such as 3D-terrain and surface models and vegetation analysis.

Wolfgang Grumeth, CEO of Airborne Technologies, says: Using our own fleet of specially configured aircraft, as well as our own sensor equipment, enables us to act flexible and fit our services exactly to the specific requirements. Together with our competent partner we have developed an efficient solution not only taking the monitoring and documentation of pipelines to a new level, but also providing an additional contribution towards enhancing reliable and efficient monitoring.

According to Dott. Nicola Battilana Member of the Board of TAG GmbH this new approach delivers much more accurate and complex data packages, offering the company new analysis options compared to traditional ground monitoring methods.
