After decades of aerial imagery acquisition, with requisite orthoimagery processing and optional mapping and terrain services, Aerial Services, Inc. (ASI) has added the RIEGL VQ-480 airborne LiDAR sensor to their list of high-accuracy mapping tools.
The RIEGL VQ-480 LiDAR sensor provides high-speed data acquisition using a narrow infrared laser beam and a fast line scanning mechanism. High-accuracy laser ranging is based on a unique echo digitization and online waveform processing, which achieves superior measurement results even under adverse atmospheric conditions and the evaluation of multiple target echoes. The scanning mechanism is based on a fast rotating multi-facet polygonal mirror, which provides fully linear, unidirectional, and parallel scan lines. The device is compact and lightweight, which will allow Aerial Services to mount it on their fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter platforms.
"The VQ-480 is a major development for our current clients and will allow some prospective clients to consider Aerial Services for their LiDAR and terrain survey needs," explained Kirk Fisher, Vice President & CFO of Aerial Services. "While we have acquired and processed LiDAR data for nearly a decade, this sensor will allow us to more aggressively apply our reputation as a high-quality data provider to a whole new data acquisition offering."
Mounted on a helicopter or fix-wing aircraft, the VQ-480 unit will be perfectly suited for the following, in addition to dozens of other, specific applications:
Corridor Mapping
Power Line Inspection
Topography & Mining
City Modeling
Mapping of Lakesides & River Banks
Agriculture & Forestry
Target Classification
Cultural Heritage Mapping
"Our choice of the RIEGL VQ-480 was based on providing the very best, high-accurate LiDAR service possible, paralleling our stature as one of the premier high-accuracy geospatial providers in the U.S.," noted President & CEO, Mike Tully. "We are excited we’ll now be able to provide both high-quality imagery, mapping, and LiDAR data."
