Tsunami Planning and LiDAR

Jarlath ONeil Dunne at the Spatial Analysis Lab at the University of Vermont sent me a notice about a blog that he posted on Friday as the tsunamis from the devasting earthquake in Japan were coming ashore. As he points out LiDAR can be critically important in planning for these potential disasters.

It turns out that Honolulu Hawaii had LiDAR collected in 2009. The island also has an excellent alert system that seems to have prevented any loss of life. Jarlath provides additional insight on the use of the digital surface models derived from the LiDAR survey and since I am having computer problems I will refer you to his blog to get the details.
