Geomagic Releases New Version of 3D Feature-based Modeling Software

Studio 9 Enables Users to Meet Design Objectives with Maximum Control, Flexibility and Ease of Use

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA: July 5, 2006 – Geomagic, a worldwide software and services firm, announces the release of Geomagic Studio 9. This latest release of the digital reconstruction software features three major areas of enhancement: 3D feature-based modeling, advanced color texture generation and greater versatility with user-defined patch layouts.

As a software tool, Geomagic Studio is the leader in effectively and automatically processing 3D scan data for applications ranging from reverse engineering to design and analysis. The software automatically creates accurate models from any physical part, making it ideal for emerging applications such as mass production of customized devices, build-to-order manufacturing and digital asset archiving for automatic recreation of legacy parts.

For design and manufacturing engineers, medical modelers and historical preservationists, the new features provide unmatched automation through: 1) the auto-detection of 3D features; 2) a redesigned powerful macro system with the ability to add logic and flow control to automation scripts; and 3) a system that enables users to define their own workflow processes to reduce (or eliminate) time-intensive tasks. With a training time of only two days, Geomagic provides out-of-the-box productivity and allows for an open workflow for ease-of-use in automotive and aerospace applications, engineering analysis and cast and molding industries.

To enable design and manufacturing engineers to detect and extract the features of an object’s fundamental design, the 3D Features enhancement optimizes a model towards the intent. This function provides the ability to reconstruct "perfect" geometry from real-world objects and scanned data. New features offer the flexibility of optimized manual creation and auto-detection of 3D features or geometric shapes.

For designers or other engineers requiring self-prescribed patch layouts, the Geomagic Studio 9 Draw Patches feature has leaped one step farther to make creating and editing patch layouts as easy as drawing curves. Meeting the needs of numerous applications for constructing NURBS surfaces, the new feature delivers this simple mechanism which provides continuous curves, straight-line drawing and refined boundary handling.

A significant addition to Studio 9 for artisans and historical preservationists, the Advanced Color feature offers the capability to convert per-vertex color models to new representations that use texture maps to retain the full color resolution. An Image Projection feature completes the offering. It features the ability to match a 2D photograph of a model with the 3D scanned model and then build a texture map from the alignment and projection of the digital photo on the scanned model.

"The new features we’ve delivered in Studio 9 are a direct result of carefully listening to our customers and responding to their needs," comments Dave Bell, senior product manager of Geomagic. "We are committed to providing cutting-edge tools to the industries we serve. Studio 9 is another example of this commitment."

Geomagic Studio Release 9 is offered in English, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Spanish and Italian from Geomagic and its worldwide distributors in June, 2006.
